Transparency and tangible results are at the forefront of RDC’s approach. Celebrating significant sustainability achievements with clearly defined goals and open reporting, RDC’s strategies align with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Some highlights of RDC’s environmental impact:
- Water wastage monitoring technology has been implemented in 32 of the company’s properties. These systems ensure efficient water use and reduce water waste.
- Seven properties are equipped with solar PV systems, generating clean energy and reducing reliance on fossil fuels, demonstrating leadership in renewable power.
- Prestigious Green Star ratings have been awarded by the Green Building Council of South Africa to six RDC properties, showcasing commitment to green building excellence and long-term sustainability.
Looking ahead, RDC has partnered with sustainability experts, Amethyst Solutions, to develop a comprehensive Environmental, Social and Governance roadmap. This strategy outlines key initiatives that further RDC’s sustainability goals:
- The strategic rollout of smart meters provide granular data on energy consumption, enabling targeted conservation efforts for the portfolio.
- Additional renewable energy solutions are actively being explored and implemented, including expanding on RDC’s existing solar power generation capacity.
- RDC is dedicated to a reduction in its carbon footprint. This commitment necessitates ongoing analysis and continuous improvement to achieve long-term environmental benefits.
As part of the development of Westlake Shopping Centre in Cape Town, a grid-tied solar PV system will be installed to offset future energy cost increases and to provide clean energy. A further twelve Power Purchase Agreements have been signed, paving the way to expand the use of clean solar power across the portfolio.
